ARVO Goes to Tyonek

When we got an urgent, last minute request from the Village of Tyonek for a clinic, we didn't think we could respond;  they wanted a spay neuter clinic PDQ - before September 15th!  We had only a couple of weeks to prepare.  But thanks to ARVO board member and veterinarian Jeanne Olson of Raven Veterinary Clinic, North Pole, we put it together very quickly.

So the first weekend of September found us in the Village, where Dr. Olson and Sally Clampitt set up shop in the Tribal Center.   What a perfect place for the clinic - lots of room, good light, and a kitchen.  Over the next couple of days, 21 family pets received spay or neuter surgery, and another 22 received vaccines, deworming and general wellness checks.

Many thanks to Christy Cincotta from Tyonek Conservation District for recognizing the serious need in Tyonek and helping coordinate a grant sponsorship for the clinic.  Many thanks to Donita Slawson, Tribal Administrator, for her support and assistance in coordinating and promoting the clinic as an important step to reduce Tyonek's overpopulation of unwanted pets.  And many thanks to Janelle Baker and Maryann Standifer, who devoted many hours at the clinic with us helping us coordinate with pet owners, keep an eye on recovery animals, and in some cases, provided transportation.  We also thank the City for putting us up very comfortably at their guest house.

Tyonek is one of several villages that has encouraged ARVO to make repeat visits on a regular basis.
